| Twice a year Medellín's shops offer the best brands at knockdown prices to drum up more business for sellers and buyers alike.
The motivation behind this event is perhaps also a celebration of Paisa culture as a whole, given that in some respects Medellín is always in sales mode. That is, of course, except for the malls whom in this case are the exception which proves the rule.
Indeed, 'bargain' culture in Medellín is so interwoven that most buyers will assume prices have been inflated in order to incorporate the inevitable discount. Some sellers will have this carefully planned out and offer the discount even before it is elicited in order to cut to the chase.
Historians have speculated this is because early settlers in Medellín were Spanish Jews fleeing the inquisition and that their fierce independent business minds are still apparent to this day.
Whatever the origin - one needs to learn to play the game - or one gets played. That is, except for twice a year, when the city celebrates Medellin es una Ganga and prices are discounted in advance. Or are they? Better ask for a discount just to be sure. |
